7 Useful Tips to Enjoy Japanese Guest House “Minshuku"

When you come to Japan, I recommend you to stay in Japanese style hotels or inns. It is one of the things that you can only experience in Japan. There are, in fact, two types of Japanese style accommodation in Japan: Ryokan and Minshuku. Today I will talk about “Minshuku.” While there are many advantages of Minshuku, there are also obstacles. In fact, Minshuku isn’t the best option for everyone. If you can overcome some inconveniences of Minshuku however, you will really enjoy your stay.

7 Useful Tips to Enjoy Japanese Guest House “Minshuku”!

1. It is a family owned guest house

While Ryokan and Minshuku are Japanese style accommodation that only exist in Japan, there are some differences. Ryokan is usually bigger and better equipped. Minshuku, on the other hand, is family owned B&B style accommodation. Because Minshuku is smaller and has less guest rooms compared to Ryokan, it is also easier to communicate with the host. As a result, you can have direct communication with the family who actually live in the area!

2. It is cheaper than other types of accommodation

Compare to Ryokan, Minshuku is cheaper. Although services are more polite and more thorough in Ryokan, you can enjoy the great, friendly services in Minshuku.

3. You can enjoy the local cuisine

Minshuku usually serve great local cuisines that many families in the area eat. If you are looking for experiencing the true local cuisine, it is where you should stay.

4. You need to share many facilities with other guests

While Minshuku is cheaper than other accommodation, some of them aren’t equipped with any bathroom or toilets inside the guest room. That means you need to share a bath, toilets and meals with other guests. If you like to take a bath in your own privacy, it might not be good choice for you.

5. You need to sleep in futon bed

In Japanese style hotels and inns, you might have to sleep on futon bed, which looks like a mattress we lay on the floor at night to sleep on. Since it feels a bit more firm than sleeping on a bed, you might not appreciate much.

6. You need to take few things

Because it is cheaper than other types of inns, some Minshuku inns don’t have the amenities that most inns usually have, such as bath towels, hair dryer, tooth brush or shaver. Therefore it would be better to take those things when you stay in Minshuku. It is also recommended to take a multi-plug if you have many electronic equipments that you need to charge.

7. You can hear local histories from local people

One of the greatest thing about staying in Minshuku is that you can actually meet the local people. You can hear local histories. You can also ask what you can do in the area or where you can find a good place to eat. You can feel like becoming a part of the community when you stay in Minshuku.

Conclusion

I can’t say that Minshuku is the most comfortable accommodation. Yet it is the best way to get to know the area and its people. You can enjoy communicating with the host and the other guests when you stay in Minshuku. It is also great that you can experience all those things for reasonable price! I hope you will consider staying in Minshuku, even just for one night.
