7 Unauthentic Japanese Sushi (Makimono)

8 Unauthentic Japanese Sushi (Makimono)

We, Japanese people love sushi including makimono –which is also called sushi roll. There are various kinds of makimono such as tekka maki (tuna roll) and kappa maki (cucumber roll). But these days, I often see unauthentic and funny makimono. Typically, makimono has sushi rice and seafood/vegetables inside and nori (sea weed) outside –but these would be opposite for unauthentic makimono. Moreover, ingredients are different, too! Here, I would like to introduce 7 unauthentic Japanese suchi, focusing on makimono.

7 Unauthentic Japanese Sushi (Makimono)

1. California Roll

One of the most famous and popular unauthentic makimono is California Roll. As you can see, it is originally from the United States. This makimono usually includes avocado, mayonnaise and imitation crab. Avocado is very creamy and tastes like toro –which is a kind of fatty tuna, so it is suitable for sushi. Even though California Roll is not created in Japan, it is now very popular in this country as well. If you are not familiar with raw fishes, this is a good one to try first!

2. Philadelphia Roll

This is another makimono from the U.S. – Philadelphia Roll includes smoked salmon and some cream cheese… that is why this is called Philadelphia Roll. I assume a lot of you have eaten these ingredients with bagels. But these are also great when eating with sushi rice and nori (sea weed). Some people even eat cream cheese with soy sauce. If you love bagels and lox, I’m sure you’ll love Philadelphia Roll, too!

3. Dragon Roll

This makimono has some avocado on the top and shrimp tempura (Japanese style deep-fried shrimp) inside. Sushi makers usually decorate the roll like a dragon –this is why the makimono is called dragon roll. Some restaurants use different ingredients such as eel and imitation crab instead of avocado and shrimp. You can enjoy not only the taste but also the fancy look! This is a nice makimono to try for those who cannot eat raw fish.

4. Rainbow Roll

Rainbow Roll is very colorful and has various kinds of seafood on it –such as salmon, tuna and shrimp on the top. Inside of the makimono is almost the same as California Roll, but I would recommend this to people who want to try more raw fish. Although this is also from the U.S., I think you can get some idea about “authentic” sushi because of the raw seafood on it.

5. Spider Roll

Don’t worry, we don’t usually eat spiders. This makimono is named Spider Roll just because it looks like a spider. It often includes some deep-fried soft shell crabs and their legs look like spider’s legs. Moreover, many sushi chefs draw a spiders’ web using some sauce on the plate so that it looks more like a spider. If you want to enjoy funny food, I would recommend Spider Roll.

6. Spicy Tuna Roll

This includes spicy tuna and some vegetables such as cucumber and lettuce. This sounds like authentic Japanese makimono –well, we love “Tuna Roll” but don’t usually make it spicy with chili. We often eat sushi/makimono with wasabi, which is a kind of horseradish. Wasabi has a unique spiciness that is different from chili and mustard. Some people love wasabi but some prefer chili or mustard. So if you want to add some spiciness to makimono, but are not familiar with wasabi, this is a good one for you!

7. Salmon Skin Roll

This makimono is also called “B.C. Roll” since it is thought to be from British Columbia in Canada while American people think it is from Los Angeles. Anyway, this makimono includes cucumber, avocado and fried salmon skin –which is very crispy and nutritious. Some Japanese people love salmon skin but a lot of times it is thrown away after eating salmon meat. But the skin contains a lot of DHA and vitamin B2, so it is good for your health. Some people say the skin is best matched with some beer. Why don’t you try this roll for today’s dinner!?

Conclusion

There are various kinds of unauthentic makimono mainly from North America. Even though they are not authentic, many people enjoy eating them. Furthermore, these makimono might be easier to try if you are unfamiliar with authentic sushi. I hope you’ll like both authentic and unauthentic makimono!
