With around 2,800 stores in Japan and more than 1,500 outlets in more than 20 countries worldwide, Daiso is likely to be a name many readers are already familiar with. Founded in 1977 as a hyakuen (¥100) store, Daiso Japan has risen to be something of a high street institution here, offering over 100,000 mostly house-brand goods, almost half of which are imported. For anyone planning to spend time living and working in Japan, Daiso is the perfect one-stop store for equipping a new home at affordable prices.

1. Stationery

I’ve been shopping at Daiso for as long as I can remember and, like all school kids then and since, I spent a good portion of my pocket money on Daiso stationery. Although Daiso’s goods are priced in multiples of ¥100 now, many items are still only ¥100. Japan is well-known for its wonderful stationery; from cute and kawaii, to traditional and practical, Daiso’s range of everyday and specialized writing and arts & crafts goods is impressive.

2. Kitchen

These days, I go to Daiso Japan whenever I need to acquire or replace kitchen items. It’s easily the best place for pots and pans or kitchen implements, especially if you’re looking for hard-to-find, low cost Western style items like lasagne dishes or casserole dishes, etc. As an avid baker, I really like Daiso’s range of silicone baking tools and moulds, though they also sell a wide range of traditional stainless, glass and earthenware bakeware too.

3. Dining

I don’t know what it is about my family, but they delight in chipping and breaking plates and dishes, or losing cutlery! Actually, I don’t care too much because it means I have a good excuse to buy new tableware, knives and forks, and chopsticks. The nice thing about Daiso tableware is that its often very chic designs coexist with a range of more conventional ones, and usually sell singly, so you can replace one item as easily as you can a complete dinner service.

4. Bathroom

If you’re looking for Japanese bathroom items such as floor slats, buckets and stools, Daiso Japan has them in traditional wood or colorful plastics. In addition, they have lots of really stylish accessories to brighten up even the most drab of bathrooms, everything from elegant soap dish sets to modish towel rails and flannel hooks. They also sell bathroom cleaning materials and personal hygiene products to enhance your bath time experience.

5. Household & Garden

Actually, the entire home can benefit from the Daiso touch. Though not really the place to buy large furniture items and white goods, Daiso Japan’s home décor range, with its focus on design, form and color, provides an affordable touch of class to any living space. And if you’re lucky enough to have a garden, or a well-tended balcony, Daiso has a wide range of practical and attractive gardening supplies, tools and materials.

6. Health & Beauty

Another reason why teenage girls in particular like shopping at Daiso is for the low-price cosmetics, which always features plenty of bright seasonal colors, as well as more sophisticatedly modish make up items. Add to this the healthcare and hygiene products, hair accessories and refillable containers, and you’ll see why so many young women equip their boudoirs at Daiso.

7. Toys & Party Items

Daiso is good for gifts too. Their selection of distinctly Japanese toys, both modern and traditional, is likely unrivaled in other countries, except in specialist import stores. Other souvenir and gift ideas include traditional Japanese paper-craft materials, ingenious puzzles and party goods and costumes. And whatever the gift, Daiso Japan’s gift wrappings, goody bags and cheerfully designed presentation boxes will add the finishing touches to any gesture.

8. Accessories

The list of accessories at Daiso is quite remarkable. Whether for pets, cars, bicycles, smart phones, electronics, batteries, or travel, Daiso Japan’s smart, colorful and appealing designs make beautiful gifts and distinctive personal items.

Conclusion

As you can gather, I’m a big fan of Daiso, but as I said at the beginning, it’s something of an institution here in Japan. Of course, there are other similar low price stores, and not everything that Daiso sells is of superior quality, but it is still an important aspect of shopping in Japan and one at which foreign visitors will find something useful or appealing, either as a gift or for the home.
