7 Must-haves to Enjoy Hanami in Japan!

Have you ever enjoyed Hanami which means seeing blossoms? It is usually held in early-mid April to see especially cherry blossoms all over Japan. But we, Japanese people often enjoy getting together under the cherry trees in addition to just looking at the flowers. Here, I would like to introduce 7 things you should bring to hanami in Japan.

7 must-haves to enjoy hanami in Japan!

1. Blankets/Sheets

Blankets and/or sheets are one of the most important things you should bring to hanami. Hanami usually takes place at a park and we sit on the ground/grass to look up the cherry trees. If you don’t have at sheets or chairs to sit on, you might get dirty. Moreover, since we usually bring some food and drinks to hanami, it’s better not to put them directly. On the ground due to the safety reason. Furthermore, although a lot of American people bring some blankets to picnic, Japanese people often have sheets called ‘leisure sheet’, which is a plastic sheet for picnic. If you don’t know which to bring, I would recommend ‘leisure sheet’ since it’s easier to be taken care of. Let’s bring leisure sheets to Hanami next spring!

2. Food

A lot of Japanese people enjoy eating as well as or maybe more than looking at cherry blossoms. When you go Hanami during the day, it might be hood idea to bring Obento / lunch box and/or sandwiches for lunch. If going in the evening or at night, you would like to have some snacks that can be eaten with alcohol. Since hanami season is usually early spring, you don’t have to worry too much about food poisoning. Have a lot of delicious food and enjoy hanami even more!

3. Drinks

Not only good but we also need something to drink! It is a good idea to bring some tea and/or soda/pop since your kids can enjoy them as well. But when going hanami at night, you might want to have some alcoholic drinks -especially beer is one of the most popular hanami drinks in Japan. Especially when getting together with a good many people, it would be like an outside party/nomikai. But be careful not to drink and enjoy too much and correct all the trash -trash bag would be another must-have when bringing some drink.

4. Jacket

Although it’s getting warmer in early April, I would recommend you to bring a jacket especially when going hanami at night, this would be necessary. The average temperature in Tokyo in early April is 15-20℃ during the day whereas in the morning/evening, it might be about 10℃. Even if you feel warm when getting out, bring a jacket just in case and/or check the weather forecast to decide what to wear. I hope you’ll enjoy hanami in comfort.

5. Cooler

Although I said that you don’t have to worry too much about food poisoning, it might be a good idea to bring a cooler. You can put your food but I would recommend to put drinks since they might be getting warmer if just put outside on the blanket or in the car. Beverages like soda/pop and beer would be the best when they are pretty cold. So don’t forget a cooler and enjoy your drinks!

6. Wet tissue/towel

These items are very useful especially when there are no water place around. Wet tissues and towels can be used not only as a hand sanitizer but also, they are very useful when spilling some liquid. Enjoy hanami and keep the environment clean, as well!

7. Camera

Anywhere you go, camera/smartphone is one of the essential items. Especially when going to hanami with quite a few people, you might need a tripod and/or selfie stick to include all the people. Furthermore, taking picture of not only people but also of cherry blossoms. I would like you to keep the beautiful memory with camera!

Conclusion

Hanami is like an outdoor party in which you can enjoy looking at flowers and getting together at the same time. In order to fully enjoy hanami in Japan, don’t forget these 7 items –I hope you’ll have fun next April!
