I am native Japanese living in United States. When I was living in Japan and even more since I moved to the US, I have a lot of friends who are native English speakers. Since Japanese language, especially “Kanji” seems so alien to them, I’m often asked about it from my American family and friends.

Today, I’m going to introduce 10 Japanese Symbols to describe Love. 1. 恋 : Love

It is pronounced “KOI”. It is the same pronunciation as Koi fish but the meaning of this symbol is totally different. This kanji is basically the same meaning as 『愛』. However, to be more specific,『恋』describes like a pure or sweet love, such an falling in love, the first love etc. This is a very cute and sweet symbol to describe Love.

 

2. 好 : like

This is a casual way to describe the feeling of liking someone or something just like the word “Like” in English. This Kanji is commonly used for girls’ names as well. “好” is a cute, sweet and kind of youthful symbol for Love.

 

3. 慕 : Adore

This symbol means deep love for someone or worship of someone and even love for God. “慕” is a very sweet and truthful meaning of love.

 

4. 絆 : Bond

When you want to use the symbol of bonding or unity in love, this symbol has the perfect meaning. “絆” can describe the love of Friendship, boyfriend/girlfriend or family etc.

 

5. 誠 : Honesty

This symbol is often used for the wedding ceremony, especially in traditional Japanese style marriage. 7. 友: Friend(s)

Friend or friendship could also mean Love. If you’d like to specify as “Best Friend” you can use 2 Kanji (symbols) together as “親友”.

Now, you might be a bit confused about the “親”. When you use this one symbol “親” singularly, it means parent(s), in addition to as I mentioned in ㈯. So, if you want to show the symbol of love for your parent(s), “親” would be really appreciative and sweet. If you want to specify it for mother the symbol is “母”, and “父” is for father.

 

9. 兄 / 弟 : Brother(s)

“兄” means older brother(s), and “弟” means younger brother(s). Each of them describes specifically older brother(s) or younger brother(s). If you want to mention both of them, you can simply use both symbols as “兄弟”. When you want to show Brotherhood or the love of your family member (brother) in Kanji, this can be cool and perfect!

 

10. 姉 / 妹 : Sister(s)
