7 Hilarious Japanese Prank

7 Hilarious Japanese Prank

Did you like pranks when you were a child? Do you still like them? We, Japanese people love pranks, too! Here, I would like to introduce 7 hilarious Japanese pranks that you might encounter in a daily life.

7 Hilarious Japanese Prank

1. Hide and scare

This is one of the simplest Japanese pranks. Just hide behind the wall or the shelf and wait for your target to come close. When the person is about to pass where you are, appear in front of the target as quickly as possible and say “Wah!” This prank is popular not only among children but also among adults. Some kids just hide behind something and make it difficult for their parents to find them. Since the prank doesn’t hurt people either physically and mentally, it is easier to use.

2. Touch and hide

This is a popular Japanese prank especially for kids when they are on the bus. Touch or poke the person in front of you slightly and try not to be noticed that you did. For example, kids named A is sitting in front of you and B is next to you. You touch A’s head slightly and quickly hide under the seat. A would look only at B and assume that B touched A’s head. Some kids don’t even hide but behave as if there was nothing happened. Although it might be easier to find out who did it, children love to enjoy this prank.

3. Call and poke

This Japanese prank is sometimes used in anime as well as in a daily life. The prank works like this; call your target by his/her name. In this case, you should be very close to the person. Many people touch his/her shoulder when calling and prepare with their index finger up. When the target turns back to see you, your index finger would poke his/her cheek. Although a lot of children love doing this, you should be careful not to poke their eyes.

4. Knock knock ginger (Knock knock run)

This prank is popular for kids all over the world –Japan is not an exception and this is called ping pong dash (Ping pong; sound of the doorbell). This is mostly done by elementary school children in this country. Kids ring the doorbell or knock the door at the target’s house and run away before the victim answer. Sometimes children are too late to run away and scolded by the target. It might be fun for little kids, but since this is very annoying, please don’t try.

5. Pitfall

A pitfall is not often seen in the real world, but many characters in anime would love to use this. Most of the time, it is difficult to find pitfalls and holes are usually very deep. Although in the real world, the word pitfall often means a risk or a trap, using a pitfall in anime is very funny and also effective.

6. Take random pictures with a smartphone

This Japanese prank is used by those who have smartphones –especially iPhone. Since the camera works without unlock the password, you can take random and/or funny pictures when your friends leave the phone on the table. This prank is easy just because you don’t have to worry about the privacy. Once I left my phone on the table when I ate out with my friends. After going back home, I looked my pictures and found out that friends of mine took a lot of pictures of funny faces. I was so surprised but didn’t feel bad since it was just funny. Try this prank the next time your friend leaves his/her phone.

7. Say opposite

People often say opposite things in a daily conversation –but only when people try to tease each other or in a very frank conversation. For example, my mother often asked me “Do you want to have some beef tonight? You love it!” even though I hated beef. The prank can make the conversation a little bit funny, but I would recommend using this only within your family or very close friends to avoid troubles. It is important to figure out what is taboo and what is okay to say.

Conclusion

There are various pranks that are popular in Japan. Some of them are very easy to use and funny although you should be careful not to hurt others. But since these pranks are also a part of our culture, I hope you’ll enjoy these hilarious Japanese pranks when you visit Japan!
